ABOUT DARLINGTON RACEWAY

Darlington Raceway, located in Darlington, South Carolina, is one of the most iconic and storied tracks in NASCAR history. Affectionately nicknamed “The Track Too Tough to Tame,” it’s known for its unique and challenging 1.366-mile (2.198 km) egg-shaped oval. The distinct layout–with tighter turns at one end and sweeping corners at the other–was a result of land constraints during its construction in the 1940s. This unusual shape makes car setup especially difficult and creates unpredictable, action-packed racing.

Since holding its first race in 1950, Darlington has become a symbol of grit, tradition, and perseverance in stock car racing. It was NASCAR’s first superspeedway and remains one of the sport’s most demanding venues, where driver finesse and tire management often matter more than outright speed. The track’s abrasive surface causes heavy tire wear, forcing teams to think carefully about pit strategy and long-run performance.

Darlington hosts two NASCAR Cup Series races each season. The spring race, usually held in May, is part of Throwback Weekend, a fan-favorite tradition where teams pay tribute to NASCAR’s past with retro paint schemes, vintage gear, and a nostalgic atmosphere throughout the track. The fall event, the Cook Out Southern 500, takes place over Labor Day weekend and is considered one of NASCAR’s crown jewel races. It also serves as the opening round of the NASCAR Playoffs, making it a crucial and highly competitive race.

In addition to its Cup Series events, Darlington also welcomes races from the NASCAR Xfinity Series and the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, offering fans a full weekend of top-tier action.

Deeply rooted in Southern motorsports culture, Darlington Raceway delivers a blend of modern NASCAR energy and historic character. From the famous “Darlington Stripe”–a telltale scrape on the right side of a car from brushing the wall in Turns 3 and 4–to its loyal fan base and legacy as a driver’s track, Darlington continues to represent the true soul of NASCAR.
