TRAFFIC RULES IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Heading to Darlington Raceway for the Cook Out Southern 500? It’s a good idea to take a few minutes and review South Carolina’s traffic laws and road safety guidelines. While many driving rules are consistent across the U.S., South Carolina has some specific regulations to be aware of before you hit the road.

South Carolina driving basics

  • Always drive on the right side of the road.
  • Obey all traffic lights and signs.
  • You may turn right at a red light after a complete stop unless posted otherwise.
  • At four-way stops, the first vehicle to arrive has the right of way. If two or more arrive at once, the driver to the right goes first.
  • Keep an eye out for farm vehicles on rural roads, especially in summer months.

Speed limits

  • Residential areas: 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h)
  • Highways and backroads: 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h)
  • Interstates: Up to 70 mph (113 km/h)
  • Speed limits are strictly enforced, especially in bad weather and construction zones. Fines double in active work zones.

DUI regulations

  • The legal blood alcohol content (BAC) limit is 0.08% for drivers age 21 and up.
  • For drivers under 21, South Carolina enforces a zero-tolerance policy–any trace of alcohol can lead to penalties.
  • DUI checkpoints are frequently set up during major events like the Cook Out Southern 500.

Seat belt & child restraint laws

  • All passengers must wear seat belts, regardless of where they’re seated.
  • Child restraint laws apply based on a child’s age, height, and weight.
  • Failing to comply can result in citations for both drivers and passengers.

Yielding and right of way

  • Always yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • Let vehicles already in the intersection move first.
  • Pull over immediately for emergency vehicles using sirens or flashing lights.

If you're pulled over by the Police

  • Pull safely to the right as soon as you see emergency lights.
  • Stay inside your vehicle, keep your seat belt on, and place your hands on the wheel.
  • Turn on your interior light at night so the officer can see inside.
  • Wait for the officer’s instructions before reaching for ID or documents.
  • You’ll be expected to show your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance.
  • Remain calm and respectful. If you disagree with a citation, you can challenge it later in court.
  • Signing a ticket is not an admission of guilt–only confirmation of receipt.
  • If you believe your rights were violated, write down the officer’s name, badge number, and vehicle ID for later reporting.
